HOME ACTIVITIES

We are a couple of chapters away

from finishing the first book in the Gregor the Underlander series. We have loved this book! This would be a great read-aloud for you and your child this summer. Students with a 4.5+ AR level can read this independently.

One of my favorite things about teaching  is instilling a love  of reading in young children. One of the ways we do this is through our AR program. Students take a STAR assessment at the beginning of the school year which determines their reading range. I create AR cards to show each child their individual reading level. The PFP library has fabulous books available at all AR levels. Students checkout 2 books of their choice on their individual level from the library - typically one fiction and one informational text (non-fiction). Ideally, students should be ready to take an AR computer comprehension test after a day or two for short books and within a week for longer books. Students are required to pass a minimum of 1 library book AR test each week.

Students are given points by the AR system based on their score on the comprehension test. When a student earns 50 AR points, the SuperLearner teachers buy that student a kid's meal from a local restaurant. Ask your child about his/her AR rewards!

Students should be reading 20 minutes each night. Whether they are reading the story assigned in their reading book, a library book, a magazine, or the newspaper, reading 20 minutes each night is the key! Just as with sports and anything else in life, practice improves one's skills. Here is a great article about the importance of reading 20 minutes every night:

Why Read 20 Minutes a Day?
